SOUTH POINT — In the old country comedy show Her Haw, Buck Owens played the guitar and Roy Clark the banjo and they did a bit where Owens said, “I’m a picking’” and Clark said, “And I’m a grinnin’.”

Friday night Chesapeake and South Point put on an offensive show and Drew Plantz said, “I’m a runnin’” while Brayden Hanshaw said, “And I’m a throwin.’”

Plantz ran 22 times for 234 yards  and 3 touchdowns as the Panthers outscored the Pointers 41-26 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Hanshaw — the South Point quarterback — went to the air to match Plantz as he completed 24-of-41 passes for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns with a pair of interceptions.

Chesapeake (4-3, 1-2) amassed 460 total yards as quarterback Jacob Harris ran 8 times for 91 yards and was 2-of-3 passing for 50 yards. Andrew Daniels ran 14 times for 85 yards and a score.

While the Panthers ran the ball 46 times, South Point ran the ball just 3 times in the first half and Hanshaw attempted 21 passes.

Actually, one of the rushes was an early snap on the play and caught Hanshaw by surprise and he fell on the ball for a loss of 3 yards.

The Pointers (1-6, 0-2) scored on the first play of the game as Hanshaw hit Kam Miller on a 61-yard pass play for a 6-0 lead 15 seconds into the game. Miller had 9 receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown.

A muffed kickoff left the Panthers on their own 2-yard line. But that didn’t matter as the Panthers went 98 yards in 19 plays capped by Daniels 10-yard scoring run with 2:33 left in the quarter.

Ethan Kerns ran for the conversion and Chesapeake led 8-6.

South Point regained the lead by scoring on a quick 2-play drive as Hanshaw hit Landon Vance on a 60-yard catch and run pass play to make it 12-8 with 9:47 on the clock.

Again, Chesapeake came right back and went 65 yards in 9 plays keyed by a one-handed grab by Andrew Isaacs for 30 yards to put the ball at the 6-yard line.

Plantz scored on the next play and the Panthers were up 14-12 at the 5:31 mark.

South Point drove to the Panthers 47, but Ethan Kerns came up with an interception and the Panthers were back in business at their own 48.

Plantz ran for 47 yards to the 5-yard line and he finished the drive on the next play and Logan Diamond kicked the conversion  with 2:02 left in the half.

South Point covered a pooch kickoff to start the second half and Hanshaw hit Vance with a 24-yard scoring pass to cut the deficit to just 21-20 at the 6;48 mark.

But Chesapeake answered the challenge and went 64 yards in just 6 plays with a 20-yard pass to Kerns, getting the ball to the Pointers’ 31.

Plantz ran for 4 yards and then Daniels bolted 27 yards for the touchdown and a 27-20 lead with 3:39 left in the quarter.

Chesapeake got to the Pointers’ 20 only to fumble the ball away. But the defense forced a punt and the Panthers began the fourth quarter with possession at their own 30.

The Panthers got to the 49 where Plantz bounced outside and ran 51 yards and dragged a couple of defenders into the end zone to score and it was 33-20 with 8:43 to play.

The Pointers came back and scored in 7 plays as Hanshaw scrambled and found Vance who broke away from the defense into the end zone and caught the scoring toss and it was 33-26 with 5:42 to play.

On what appeared to be a busted play, Harris ran 45 yards to the 6-yard line. Spencer Wright plowed into the end zone from 2 yards out and Harris passed to Kerns for the conversion with 4:00 left.

In a couple of OVC home games Friday, the Panthers face Gallipolis and the Pointers play Coal Grove.
