COAL GROVE — Abbie Deeds must be suffering from amnesia. She’s forgotten how to give up a hit.
After pitching a 5-inning perfect game on Saturday, Deeds pitched a 7-inning one-hitter on Monday as the Coal Grove Lady Hornets blanked the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 7-0 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Deeds struck out 14 and did not give up a walk. The only hit was a single by Olivia Dickerson in the first inning.
Coal Grove (8-7, 6-2) got a run in the second as Kasey Vanderhoof and Braelie Hitchcock singled and both Deeds and Shay Collins walked to force in the run.
The lead went to 3-0 in the third inning.
Rylee Black singled and came around to score as Mia Haynes singled and an outfield error went for 2 bases. Kendall Taylor’s 2-out base hit drove in Haynes.
Coal Grove put the game away with 4 runs in the sixth inning.
Deeds walked, Collins singled and Black was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Haynes singled to drive in 2 runs and then Vanderhoof and Hitchcock followed with RBI singles.
Collins was 3-3 with an RBI, Vanderhoof 3-4 with 2 RBI, Hitchcock 3-4 with an RBI and Haynes 2-4 with 2 RBI to pace Coal Grove. Which had 15 hits. Deeds was 1-2, Black 1-3 and both Izzy Kitts and Taylor were 1-4.
Dickerson was 1-3 for Portsmouth (4-10, 2-7).
