Nell Payne

Nell Lois Robinson Payne, 89, of Pedro, passed away Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, at the Oakmont Manor Nursing Home in Flatwoods, Kentucky.

The Viers, Virginia native was born Oct. 29, 1934, a daughter of the late Charles Leonard Robinson and Bertha Arrington Robinson.

Nell was a graduate of Waterloo High School with the class of 1953 where she was a cheerleader.

She was a homemaker and along with her husband Dick, ran the family farm and later a dairy.

She always raised a large garden, canning and freezing food for the coming winter and made the best pies around.

She was an active member and enjoyed her church, Slabfork Methodist Church near Pedro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Richard Neal “Dick” Payne, on Nov. 22, 2021; one sister, Myrl Eva Robinson Owens; and six brothers, Lacy Granville Robinson, Clarence Glenn Robinson, Clifford Earl Robinson, Andrew Jack Robinson, Paul D. Robinson and Fayne Lee Robinson.

Those left to cherish her memory are two sisters, Ruth Hawkins, of North Palm Beach, Florida and Helen Harden, of Berea, Kentucky; many nieces and nephews; two close nephews, both of whom lived with Nell and Dick for periods of time, James Miller, of Berea, Kentucky and Mike Miller, of Derry, New Hampshire; her chosen daughter, Mary Beth Jones; and her chosen granddaughter, Ronda Imes, whose help has been immeasurable; and her special cousin and friend, Betty Willis.

The family will receive friends noon–1 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton. Graveside service will follow in Slabfork Cemetery at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Robbie Brown officiating.
