Mary Hobart

Mary Ann (Miller) Hobart, 94, of Columbus, passed peacefully in hospice care on Dec. 19, 2023, with four of her eight children by her side.

She was born Dec. 5, 1929, in Akron and lived in Marion, birthplace of her mother, until moving to Ironton, birthplace of her father.

Mary Ann was the oldest of 12 children and graduated as Valedictorian from St. Joseph Catholic High School, Ironton, in 1947.

After high school, she traveled, often going to Notre Dame football games.

She was an avid Buckeyes fan.

Mary Ann worked at the Dayton Malleable office in Ironton, until her marriage to Ralph Hobart in 1955.

They lived in Angola, Indiana then in Ironton, briefly before relocating to Buffalo, New York, Rock Hill, South Carolina, Pearisburg, Virginia, and Middletown, New Jersey.

The last transfer was to Columbus, in 1974, where she raised her eight children, taught CCD at St. Peter Catholic Church, provided day care in her home for several years and became the “lunch lady” at the middle school.

Most recently she lived at Villas at St. Therese Assisted Living Facility in Columbus.

Her last weeks were spent surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Alois and Anna Mae Miller; the father of her children, Ralph Hobart; her brother, John Miller; and many in-laws.

She is survived by brothers and sisters, Thomas, James, William, Elizabeth Rist, Joseph, Francis, Carolyn Hoessle, Daniel, Elaine, Annette; eight children, Carol (Greg) Thompson, Rebecca (Mark) Berbert, Matthew (Donna), Stephen (Sally), Robert (Tammy Williams), Rose (Andy) Keener, Nancy (Brian) Hadley, Joel; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren (for now); many in-laws, nieces and nephews and extended family.

A Funeral Mass was held at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church, in Gahanna, on Dec. 26.

A second service was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ironton, on Dec. 27.

Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.
