3 sentenced for taking steel from W.Va. company

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) – Three men have been sentenced for taking more than $100,000 worth of steel products from Steel of West Virginia and selling the material as scrap.

The Herald-Dispatch reports that 35-year-old William E. Lynd of Chesapeake will spend one year and one day in prison for his role in the thefts.

Thirty-three-year-old Roger Layman of Chesapeake was sentenced to one weekend in jail, three months of home confinement and three years’ probation. The third defendant, 40-year-old, Christopher Mueller of Huntington, received three weekends in jail and five months of home confinement.

All three pleaded guilty last December to conspiracy to transport stolen goods across state lines. They were sentenced Monday in federal court in Huntington.

Library sponsors free exercise class

CANNONSBURG, Ky. — Free exercise classes for older people or those with physical limitations continue through April at the Kyova Mall.

The Body Recall classes are sponsored by Boyd County Public Library and the Boyd County Health Department. The 30-minute sessions are held each Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m., in the mall’s community room.

Body Recall is designed to help people reclaim the variety of movement and strength that helps make living pleasurable. It features mild exercises set to music. It is ideal for the overweight, diabetic, those recovering from surgery, illness or injury, heart patients, or anyone looking for a low-key beginning exercise program.

‘Walk Thru the Old Testament’ at Ashland church

ASHLAND, Ky. – You can still “Walk Thru the Old Testament” Saturday, April 2, at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Ashland, according to Margaret Ruth, the church’s Evangelism Committee chairperson.

Registration for the seminar is still open to the public, according to Ruth. The cost per person is $25 and includes workbook and lunch. Late reservations will be taken until the day of the seminar, space permitting. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. with a brief fellowship period and registration completion. Registration can be made in person at the church or by calling (606) 324-5335.

AARP holds two weekly help sessions at BCPL

SUMMIT, Ky. — As the deadline to file taxes nears, Boyd County Public Library reminds people of the weekly tax assistance program offered at the Summit Branch.

The Tax-Aide Program, conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons, is on Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursdays, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The branch is located at 1016 Summit Road, across from Boyd County Middle School.

The Tax-Aide program runs through April 14. The assistance is for those in the middle- or low-income categories, with special attention to those ages 60 years and older.

Those needing help should bring with them all the necessary 2010 tax forms, including W-2; copies of 2009 federal and Kentucky income tax returns; unemployment compensation statements, SSA-1099 (for Social Security benefits); all 1099 forms showing dividends and interest; and any other pertinent tax documents, including documentation if itemizing deductions.

Some federal forms and instructions are available free of charge at the Main, Catlettsburg and Summit branches. The Kentucky Revenue Cabinet does not provide bulk forms and instructions to libraries, but BCPL staff will print off one copy of every state form that a patron needs.
