35 indictments returned

An Ironton man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend multiple times has been indicted for attempt to commit aggravated murder.

Calvin L. Carter, 53, of 729 Ninth St. Apt. A., was one of 35 people who were indicted by a Lawrence County grand jury during its two-day session last week.

By indicting for attempted aggravated murder, the grand jury found that the man had prior calculation and planned to commit murder during the Feb. 26 incident, Assistant Prosecutor Brigham Anderson said.

“The grand jury felt he wanted to kill her,” Anderson said, adding that attempted aggravated murder carries more weight than attempted murder.

The woman was treated and released at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

The man was also indicted for felonious assault. He will be arraigned on both charges Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

The grand jury also brought new charges against former Ohio State Highway patrolman Thomas Hacker and his wife Cindy Hacker. Thomas Hacker, 31, of 188 County Road 43, Ironton, was indicted on 32 counts of fourth-degree complicity to deception to obtain dangerous drugs and one count of second-degree complicity to deception to obtain dangerous drugs. His wife, Cindy S. Hacker, 35, of the same address, was indicted on nine counts of fifth-degree deception to obtain a dangerous drug, 72 counts of fourth-degree deception to obtain dangerous drugs, one count of second-degree deception to obtain a dangerous drug and one count of third-degree tampering with evidence.

The two were indicted on drug charges during a previous grand jury. Those charges will be nullified once they are served with the new charges, according to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office. They were both previously charged with one count of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity but the recent grand jury did not return an indictment for those charge.

The grand jury also indicted the following people:

– Corey A. Stewart, 37, of 4660 Old William Penn, Monroeville, Pa., first-degree aggravated burglary and first-degree aggravated robbery

– Joshua Coakley, 22, of 790 County Road 15, South Point, fifth-degree breaking and entering and fifth-degree theft

– Roger A. McKinney, 45, of 223 Township Road 1186 #15, South Point, second-degree felonious assault

– Norma J. James, 49, of 208 Township Road 1461, Ironton, third-degree aggravated theft

– Nicole LeGrand, 30, of 104 Private Drive 3, Apt. 8, Chesapeake, second-degree burglary

– Anthony S. Stevens, 24, of 751 High St., Coal Grove, fifth-degree theft

– Michael D. Downs, 35, of 2212 ½ Center Ave., Ashland, Ky., fourth-degree grand theft of a motor vehicle

– Carlos Ray Ferguson, 30, of 25 Oakmont Road, Huntington, W.Va., fifth-degree theft and fourth-degree criminal trespass

– Christopher Talbert, 20, of 3587 Pine Ridge Road Lot 15, Huntington, W.Va., fifth-degree trafficking in marijuana, fifth-degree possessing criminal tools and misdemeanor possessing drug abuse instruments

– Wayne A. Freeman, 47, of 61 Township Road 84 W., Willow Wood, three counts of second-degree felonious assault with firearm specifications, misdemeanor having weapons while intoxicated

– Jacob C. Morrison, 23, of 2328 County Road 30, Kitts Hill, misdemeanor operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and misdemeanor driving under suspension

– Mickey A. Petry, 51, of 8417 Green St., Wheelersburg, second-degree aggravated drug trafficking, fifth-degree drug trafficking, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor possession of a dangerous drug

– Georgetta K. Collins, 39, of 1061 Glendale, Wheelersburg, second-degree aggravated drug trafficking, fifth-degree trafficking in drugs, misdemeanor possession of a dangerous drug, misdemeanor possession of drugs and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia

– Cameron Simmons, 33, of 2014 Maryland Ave. Apt 6, Columbus, first-degree possession of crack cocaine, third-degree tampering with evidence, fifth-degree possession of drugs, misdemeanor assault, and second degree felonious assault

– Dale Mayo, 50, of 905 Gilley St., Flatwoods, fourth-degree improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle

– Joseph P. Williams, 49, of 1729 Dalton Ave., Huntington, W.Va., fourth-degree domestic violence

– Edward S. Holmes Jr., 32, of 722 Mulberry St., Ironton, fifth-degree theft

– Joshua T. White, 30, of 302 N. Seventh St., Ironton, third-degree sexual battery

– Martin E. Stapleton , 28, of 2163 County Road 22, Ironton, fifth-degree breaking and entering, misdemeanor assault, and misdemeanor attempted theft

– Rhonda Robinson, 50, of 1212 ½ S. Sixth St., Ironton, two counts of fifth-degree deception to obtain a dangerous assault and three counts of fourth-degree deception to obtain a dangerous drug.

Of the 35 indictments, 12 secret indictments were also returned.

Besides returning the indictments, the grand jury also visited the county jail and looked into the discipline, treatment of prisoners as well as their habits, diet and accommodations, according to the report. The grand jury found that the laws concerning county jails have not been broken, but that the overcrowding of prisoners should be addressed. While capacity is 52, the jail houses 79, the grand jury report states.
