WMU slip by Ohio, 85-83

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Flenard Whitfield recorded a double-double and Demetrius Ward added 22 points as Western Michigan edged Ohio 85-83 Saturday.
Whitfield finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Broncos (13-10, 6-4 Mid-American Conference). Juwan Howard Jr., had 12 points and Mike Douglas 10.
D.J. Cooper led the Bobcats (12-13, 5-6) with 17 points, and DeVaughn Washington added 16 points and 11 rebounds.
After Cooper’s 3-pointer made it 85-83 with 6 seconds remaining, Douglas missed two free throws with 4 seconds to play, giving Ohio a chance, but Tommy Freeman missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
There were 11 lead changes and nine ties, and neither team led by more than seven. Whitfield’s layup with 10:27 remaining put Western Michigan up 58-57, and the Broncos led the rest of the way.
