Event will benefit Ashland Community Kitchen

Choir music and the chance to help out those who are in need. That’s what’s in store at an event at Ironton First Church of the Nazarene this weekend.

The church is hosting a choir fest at 6 p.m. Sunday. The Ironton High School chorus and the Singing Kernels will perform. The event is being co-sponsored by Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene.

“The barbershop chorus is awesome,” Robert Hale, pastor of the church, said. “It’s really fun and entertaining and the high school chorus, they’re just great too.”

But besides offering good music, this event will also help feed the hungry. Canned food donations will be accepted for the Ashland Community Kitchen.

Hale said the idea for the event, was originally scheduled for late last year but canceled due to snow. It came from a desire to help and to give others an opportunity to help as well. The church regularly donates money and collects food items for various food pantries in Ironton. This event will benefit the Ashland food pantry, but the organization does serve Ironton residents as well.

“Ashland and Ironton are like a stone’s throw away,” Hale said. “A lot of people from Ironton come there.”

Event-goers are asked to bring cans with pop-tops so that people don’t need a can opener to open them. The items are given out to people on the weekend when the kitchen is closed.

Besides the choirs, a representative from Community the Kitchen will be on hand to speak about the organization.

Hales said he would like to have the event become an annual tradition with that more high school choruses from the area participate.

The church is located at Fourth and Pleasant streets.
