This week, graduating seniors in South Point got a nice surprise.

They were told that they would each receive a school yearbook, free of charge, in the fall, personalized and stamped with the their name.

The gift came after the school’s yearbook supervisor, Joan Hall, reached out to local businesses, hoping to get sponsors for the seniors, who will not be having a traditional graduation ceremony due to the crowd limitations and stay at home orders surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

Freeman called on businesses in the county, if they are in a position to do so, to help out and consider doing the same for seniors at the other school districts in the county.

We commend Freeman for his generosity and we would like to second his call for community support during this shutdown.

We realize many businesses are struggling and have difficulties of their own, but, if you are in a position to do so, please think of the needs you can help ease in the county.

And there are many ways this can be done, in addition to schools.

Residents at nursing homes in the county have had a ban on visitors due to their vulnerability during the pandemic. A small gift could brighten their day.

Food pantries in the county are seeing an increased need. Donations, whether monetary or in the form of items, can always be of help.

Think about reaching out to areas of the county where you think there might be a need.

While, thankfully, there have been several organizations, such as United Way offering aid and grants to nonprofits in the county and our elected officials have been working to steer funding to help, there is always more than can be done.

The COVID-19 crisis is hitting everyone, and we should look out for those who are most vulnerable and do all we can to lift them in this time of need.
