KITTS HILL — Symmes Valley schools will pause their meal program next week, superintendent Darrell Humphreys said.

The school system has been offering meals at multiple locations throughout the week for students while schools have been closed during the coronavirus pandemic.

Humphreys said the break is to evaluate the situation as a period begins in which national and state officials are expecting a spike in cases.

He said the break occurs during what is normally the spring break in the academic year, when the schools typically do not offer meals.

“This gives us time to study the dynamics of the COVID-19 situation and determine if we can continue in a safe manner for our families, cooks and volunteers,” he said. “We hope circumstances allow us to resume soon.”

Humphreys praised all involved.

“Our food service director Kim Wells, along with our principals, cooks and many volunteers have done a great job of servicing our students during this difficult time.”

Chesapeake schools announced that they are canceling the grab and go food bags they were offering while schools were out.

“Due to the surgeon general’s directive we will be canceling the Grab and Go food bag program,” a statement from the school district said. “It is our belief that, for the safety of everyone involved, we must follow this directive. Thank you everybody who have helped by volunteering and those who donated food for this cause. You have made a difference! Thank you and stay healthy.”
