Herman Zornes

Nov. 29, 1933– Nov. 16, 2019

Herman Eugene Zornes, 85, of Ironton, passed away Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Kentucky. The Hanging Rock native was born Nov. 29, 1933, a son to the late Orville and Edith Gannon Zornes.

Herman attended the Hanging Rock schools and was a 1952 graduate of Rock Hill High School.

Mr. Zornes worked 30 years for the Semet-Solvay Coke Plant and retired from Tri-State Industries in Coal Grove. He was a member of the West Ironton Church of the Nazarene.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Zornes.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Brannigan Zornes, who he married Dec. 11, 1953; five children, John (Marsha) Zornes, of Pickerington, Joni (Jim) Hacker, Jerri Murphy, Joel Zornes and Jay (Bekki) Zornes, all of Ironton; six grandchildren, Jessica Davis, Marissa Dotson, Jordan Zornes, Katie Hacker, Lilly Zornes and Julia Zornes; three great-grandchildren, Beckett Dotson, Lola Miller and Scout Miller; two sisters, Dolores (Paul) Queen, of Flatwoods, Kentucky and Judy (Perry) Holliday, of Coal Grove; and two brothers, Ray (Nancy) Zornes, of Kitts Hill, and Doug (Rosemary) Zornes, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Herman participated in Senior Softball for 20 years in Venice, Florida, culminating in induction to the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame in 2015. He is also a member of the Ohio Senior Softball Hall of Fame.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the West Ironton Church of the Nazarene, 317 Elm St., Ironton, with Pastor Lawrence Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. The Zornes family will receive friends Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral at the church.

Memorial donations in Herman’s honor may be made to the building fund at the West Ironton Church of the Nazarene.

Jerry Holtzapfel

Feb. 20, 1942–Nov. 15, 2019

Jerry F. Holtzapfel, formerly of Ironton, 77, died on Friday Nov. 15, 2019, in New Boston.

Born Feb. 20, 1942, he was the son of the late Raymond J. and Libby Kirk Holtzapfel.

He was a Saint Joseph High School graduate, class of 1960, a member of Saint Joseph Church and  a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was self-employed.

His daughter, Sacressa Fleming; and one granddaughter, Tawney Holtzapfel, preceded him in death.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Carman Fleming and Nick Ralston; two sisters, Donna Rose and Laura Jones; and one brother, Joe Holtzapfel.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Joseph Catholic Church with Father David Huffman officiating. Visitation will 9:30–10:30 a.m. at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Post 8850 will perform military rites.

Thomas Rucker

Thomas Eugene Rucker, 73, of Ironton, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at home. He is survived by his wife, Louisa Faith Rucker.

Funeral service will be noon Wednesday at Ironton City Mission Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pamela Calhoun

Pamela Sue Calhoun, 60, of Gallipolis, passed away Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at home. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville. Burial will follow in Miller Memorial Gardens, Miller. Visitation will be held 1–2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Jack Lawless

Feb. 28, 1926– Nov. 18, 2019

Jack F. Lawless, 93, of Ironton, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2019.

The Lawrence County native was born Feb. 28, 1926, the son of the late Forrest M. Lawless Sr. and Dorothy Ray Lawless. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen N. Galvin Lawless.

Mr. Lawless attended Ironton High School and was a clerk for the State of Ohio, where he retired in 1988 after 16 years of service. He is a United States Marine Veteran who served in World War II.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Wall and Rosemary Zaiger; and a brother, Robert Lawless.

He is survived by a son, Jack P. (Joany) Lawless, of South Point; a daughter, Susan K. Lawless, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky; a brother, David (Jan) Lawless, of Westerville; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Woodland Cemetery, Section 22, with the Rev. James Cremeans officiating. Burial will follow. Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lawrence County Animal Shelter, 820 Isaac Park Road, Louisa, KY, 41230.

Richard Abbott

Richard Edward Abbott, 65, of South Point, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
