HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall and Virginia Tech announced on Thursday that the two schools have scheduled a home-and-home football series, slated for 2023 and 2024.
The Hokies will visit Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Sept. 23, 2023, while the Thundering Herd will invade Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va., on Sept. 7, 2024.
“These two games will be a treat for Thundering Herd fans,” said Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick.
“Virginia Tech is rich in tradition and has been one of the most consistent football programs for so many years. We look forward to welcoming them back to Huntington in four years and I know we’ll have a lot of fans make the trip down there as well.”
Since Hamrick’s arrival in the fall of 2009, Marshall has landed home-and-home football series with Virginia Tech, NC State, Pitt, Louisville, Purdue, Boise State, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Navy, Army and Appalachian State, rekindled a longtime rivalry with Miami (Ohio) with a four-game contract and renewed the “Battle of the Bell” series with Ohio.
In July 2016, Hamrick negotiated a $1.4 million contract for a single game at the University of South Carolina, the largest guarantee in school history. In 2022, Marshall will visit Notre Dame.
The Hokies lead the all-time series 11-2, but Marshall has won two of three meetings in Huntington (1939, 1940).
