CHESAPEAKE — Football is the favorite game of the Rock Hill Redmen. Keep Away is their second favorite.
When you combine the two games, you find someone who doesn’t want to play any games with you anymore.
Rock Hill used its power, ball-control offense to keep the ball away from the speedy and quick-strike style of the Chesapeake Panthers in their Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
The Redmen ran 60 times for 377 yards — they did not attempt a pass — as they beat the Chesapeake Panthers 28-22 in a game where neither team punted and each team had only five possessions.
Rock Hill (2-7, 2-4) was led by T.J. McGinnis who ran 30 times for 168 yards and Logan Hankins who had 137 yards on 16 attempts.
Chesapeake (4-5, 3-3) was paced by quarterback Donald Richendollar who had 14 carries for 143 yards and was 1-of-3 passing for 20 yards.
Kamren Harless ran back the opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown but the score was nullified by a penalty.
However, the Panthers shrugged it off and went 55 yards in just four plays capped by Richendollar’s 16-yard run. Randy Wilson booted the conversion and it was 7-0 with 10:24 on the clock.
Rock Hill answered with an 80-yard, 18-play drive that culminated with a 3-yard run by McGinnis and Tristan Delong’s kick tied the score.
The drive took 10 minutes off the clock to leave only 24 seconds in the quarter.
The Panthers got the ball at their own 36 and used six plays to score as Richendollar kept the ball and went 44 yards into the end zone. Wilson’s kick had it 14-7 with 10 minutes left in the half.
The Redmen came right back with an 88-yard, 15-play drive that featured a fourth down conversion at the 5-yard line just prior to the touchdown and the game was tied at 14.
With 2:01 left in the half, Chesapeake threatened on its next possession. A 20-yard pass from Richendollar to Harless got the ball to the Redmen 28. But four plays later the drive stalled at the 9-yard line as time ran out.
Rock Hill got the second half kickoff and drove 70 yards in 13 plays. The longest run was 18 yards by Hankins and Compliment bulled into the end zone from 7 yards out and Delong’s kick made it 21-14 with 4:50 on the third quarter clock.
The Panthers drove from the 46 to the Redmen 14-yard line only to have a fourth down pass sailed incomplete.
Rock Hill began the second half with a 70-yard, 10-play march highlighted by Hankins’ 18-yard run and McGinnis’ 7-yard scoring run.
Chesapeake got its lone possession of the third quarter and moved from its own 46 to the Rock Hill 14. A fourth down pass was incomplete and the Redmen defense had held.
The Redmen then went the length of the field in 10 plays to score. On second down at the 1-yard line, Brayden Friend punched it into the end zone and it was 28-14 with 7:12 to play.
Chesapeake got the ball back at the 41 and had to run 10 plays before Harless went the final 3 yards with 4:20 on the clock.
A penalty moved the ball closer and Harless added the conversion run to make it 28-22.
But with the aid of a 42-yard run by Hankins to the Panthers’ 23, the Redmen need five plays to run out the clock and secure the win.
Next Friday, Rock Hill host Coal Grove and Chesapeake travels to Fairland.
