Douglas Haas

Jan. 18, 1961 — Oct. 14, 2019

Douglas Ray “Smiley” Haas, 58, of Brazil, Indiana,  passed away on Oct. 14, 2019, at his home, unexpectedly.

Doug was born on Jan. 18, 1961, in Ironton, the son of Jerry and Ruth (Bruce) Haas.

He graduated from Brazil High School with the class of 1979. Following high school, he worked as a truck driver. Later, he followed in his dad’s footsteps, where he worked for Verizon, installing fiber optic cable from coast to coast. After leaving Verizon, he worked as an over-the-road truck driver for various trucking companies.

He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed fishing and watching NASCAR and Star Trek marathons. Most of all, he enjoyed drinking and spending time with others.

He is survived by his mother, Ruth (Bruce) Haas of Brazil, Indiana; son, Justin Haas, and girlfriend, Britany Doty, of Terre Haute, Indiana; daughter, Sadie Elizabeth Haas, of Greencastle, Indiana; grandchildren, McKenna Haas, Ava Haas, Bryceton Nunn, and Dylan Doss; brother, Jerry “Jay” Haas, of Brazil, Indiana; sister, Kristi Cundiff and husband, Brian; friend, Tyra Handlin; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Haas; and paternal grandparents, Paul and Doris Haas.

Visitation will be at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave. Brazil, Indiana, from 5-7 p.m. on Monday. Services will be at the funeral home at 7 p.m. on Monday, with Pastors Ernie Rush and Clark Cowden officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion 10 N. Depot St, Brazil, IN 47834 or Veterans of Foreign Wars 303 S Depot St, Brazil, IN 47834 in Doug’s honor.

Jerry Brown Sr.

Nov. 4, 1942 — Oct. 16, 2019

Jerry Lee Brown, Sr., 76, of Waterloo, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019, at his residence.

Mr. Brown was born Nov. 4, 1942 in Middletown, a son to the late Raymond T. and Juanita (Elliott) Brown.

Mr. Brown attended Middletown High School and was a United States Army veteran. He was retired from Wayne National Forest, where he was a junior forestry ranger.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Brown.

He is survived by a daughter, Lori Ann Cole; three sons, Jerry L. Brown, Jr., David Brown and Curtis Brown; three brothers, Larry (Betty) Brown, Robert Brown and Richard (Claudia) Brown; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. 7th St. Ironton. VFW Post 8850 of Ironton will perform military rites immediately following the visitation at Phillips Funeral Home.

Genevieve Maddy

Genevieve Maddy, 94, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019, at Community Hospice in Ashland, Kentucky.

Genevieve’s celebration of life will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Oak St. Chapel, 2402 Oak St. Flatwoods, Kentucky, with visitation beginning at noon. Her son-in-law, Rev. Joe VanMeter, will be officiating, with interment following at Zoar Cemetery in Coal Grove. Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, is assisting the family with arrangements.
