SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers have been a second half team all season. No reason to change on Tuesday.
The Pointers trailed at halftime before rallying in the second half to edge the Rock Hill Redmen 2-1 in an Ohio Valley Conference soccer game.
“I thought we come out flat and didn’t execute very well in the first half. We turned the ball over in bad spots entirely too often early on and it set a tone for a bad half,” said Pointers’ coach Zach Jenkins.
“We were fortunate to only be trailing 1-0 at the half. At halftime, we didn’t make a great deal of adjustments in terms of our game plan. It was simple. We had to play with energy, attitude and urgency. I felt the final 40 minutes we dominated.”
South Point got its fifth straight win and is now 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the OVC. Rock Hill fell to 4-3 and 2-1.
Rock Hill got a 1-0 lead at the 28-minute mark of the first half on a goal by Sam Simpson off an assist by Jasson Aguilera.
South Point didn’t score until the 60-minute mark in the second half on a goal by Tyler Lilly off cross from Carmie McGuffin.
Lilly got the winning goal nine minutes later as he boomed a strike from 35 yards out that dropped right under the cross bar.
“I challenged Tyler Lilly to be the best player on the field in the second half of the game and he responded well to that challenge netting both of our goals,” said Jenkins.
Goalie Brody Blackwell had nine saves for the Pointers. Blake Wilson recorded six saves for the Redmen.
The Pointers visit New Boston on Thursday.
