Economic development often moves at a pace that makes a snail seem like it is moving at light speed by comparison, but the key is that it is still moving forward.

Many citizens get discouraged at the slow progress that is made on projects, often getting frustrated with our elected officials.

But everyone must remember that patience is the key. Positive changes won’t happen overnight but, to borrow from an old cliché, “slow and steady wins the race.”

Lawrence County has a variety of projects that could make for a great victory celebration once we finally arrive at the finish line.

In Ironton, work continues in the Ninth Street area on a project that will hopefully pave the way for a hotel and the dining options that often come with such a facility.

Just a mile or so away, St. Mary’s Medical Center is moving ahead with a health care campus that could ideally grow into a full fledged hospital.

In South Point, two existing businesses — McGinnis, Inc. and Merciers — have committed to job expansion in upcoming years in exchange for tax breaks.

On the eastern side of the county, the River Walk commercial and retail development is gaining momentum. If it ever reaches the developers’ dreams, this will become a key business development for the entire region.

Although everyone would like to see these types of projects move more quickly, t he fact they are still going at all in this economy is a testament to the commitment of everyone involved.
