Seniors from five Lawrence County high schools took part in Biomed Day at Ironton High School on Monday.
The event featured graduating seniors from Project Lead the Way classes at Chesapeake, South Point, Ironton, Dawson-Bryant and Rock Hill high schools, Matt Monteville, satellite director for Collins Career Technical Center, which oversees the classes, said.
“We got our seniors together and did a recombinant DNA lab,” he said. “They took the DNA out of one organism and inserted it into the DNA of another organism. They were then able to analyze it and see how well it transferred.”
Monteville described it as a “very detailed, complicated lab.”
“It’s a reward for all the hard work the seniors put in,” he said. “And it gives them a chance to use their lab skills.”
Monteville said the event featured all the schools that host the Project Lead the Way program, other than Symmes Valley, which started courses in 2017 at the freshman level and does not have seniors yet.
The program, which offers STEM biomedical and engineering courses at the host schools, is set to have a graduation dinner at Dawson-Bryant High School next week.
Monteville said, next year, PLTW will be teaming up with Project First Impression, with its students coming up with designs for each area of the county to make it more energy efficient and clean.
