Driving in runs helps drive the opposition crazy.
Isaac Whaley and Matt Sheridan drove in four runs each and Jimmy Mahlmeister had three RBI as the Flyers routed the Hannan Wildcats 16-2 in five innings on Friday.
St. Joseph (8-1) had 16 hits with Whaley going 3-4, Jackson Rowe 3-3, and Ethan Clark, Sheridan and Mahlmeister were all 2-3.
Ryan Payne worked the first two innings to get the win. He struck out three, gave up two hits and did not allow a run.
Izsak Unger, Max Weber and Elijah Rowe all took turns on the mound. It was the first varsity career innings for Payne, Unger and Weber.
“Those three got their first innings and looked pretty good. We will need them to continue to give us quality innings,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
“Ethan Clark, Jacob Salisbury and Elijah Rowe also had nice games offensively.”
The Flyers got two runs in the first inning.
Jackson Rowe singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Sheridan who went to second on the throw home. Sheridan went to third on a ground out and scored on Jimmy Mahlmeister’s double.
The lead went to 5-0 in the second.
Jacob Salisbury and Clark singled and moved up on a ground out. Jackson Rowe had an RBI singled and Sheridan grounded out as a run scored. Whaley then doubled home Rowe.
The Flyers erupted for seven runs in the third.
Michael Mahlmeister and Clark singled and pinch-runner Jaden Majia scored on a hit by Elijah Rowe. Jackson Rowe and Sheridan walked and Whaley singled home two runs.
Chase Wilds reached on an error as a run scored and Jimmy Mahlmeister singled to drive in two more runs.
The Flyers got their final four runs in the fourth.
Salisbury walked, Jackson Rowe doubled and Sheridan and Whaley had RBI singles. Wilds then delivered a two-run single to cap the rally.
