CHESAPEAKE — Winners have been named for the 2019 Lawrence County Science fair, which took place at Chesapeake High School on Thursday.

-Best Overall-

There was a three-way tie for first place in Best Overall Project, with Jacob Harris and Cecilia Haldeman, of Chesapeake Middle, and Gavin Simpson, of St. Lawrence Elementary, sharing the honor with a score of 39.33 each.

Harris’ project was “Fortnite: Does Fortnite Affect Your Physical State?” Haldeman entered “Soda Pop Music,” while Simpson presented “What a Drag?”

Taking second place was Ben Sloan, of Ironton Middle School, and third place went to Braxton Oldaker, of Chesapeake Middle.

-7^th and 8^th grade-

First place went to Sloan, of Ironton Middle School, with Oldaker, of Chesapeake Middle School, in second. Third place was a team project by Isabel Morgan and Tessa Shelton, of Ironton Middle School.

Fourth place was a three-way tie between Kathryn Bell, of Fairland Middle, and Dawson Forbush and Leah Shields, of Chesapeake Middle. Brenna Reedy, of Fairland Middle, took fifth place.

-5th and 6^th grade-

First place was a tie between Harris and Haldeman, of Chesapeake Middle School, and Simpson, of St. Lawrence, while second place went to Bryce McDaniel, of Ironton Middle School.

Third Place was a tie between Samuel Walker, of St. Lawrence, and Kamryn Wilson, of Dawson Bryant Middle School.

Fourth place was a tie between Ethan Kerns, of Chesapeake Middle School, and Ella Childers, of South Point Middle School, while Blake Medinger, of St. Lawrence, came in fifth.

 

The fair, organized by the Lawrence County Educational Services Center,  is open to fifth through sixth graders who earned a superior rating at their individual school fairs. Those earn a Superior rating at county are eligible to compete in the district fair at University of Rio Grande. This year’s fair featured 146 projects.
