Lady Dragons slip past Lady Pointers in overtime

SOUTH POINT — Just another night in the Ohio Valley Conference.
In one of the most competitive seasons for the league, it was never more evident on Thursday as the Fairland Lady Dragons slipped past the South Point Lady Pointers 59-58 in overtime.
Fairland is now 13-3 overall and tied with Coal Grove for first place at 8-2. South Point fell to 12-4 and 7-3 in the league.
The game was tied at 53 after regulation and Brittany Thompson hit a shot 16 seconds into the extra period to put the Lady Dragons ahead.
Diamond Crawley answered with a 3-pointer as South Point took the lead. Harley Lyons scored as Fairland went back in front only to have Emilee Whitt make a basket for a 58-57 lead with 31 seconds to play.
Fairland worked the ball to Allie Marshall who was fouled with 11 seconds left and made both free throws for a 59-58 lead.
Whitt’s attempt at the buzzer failed to connect and Fairland had held on for the win.
Marshall also made two foul shots with 22 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give the Lady Dragons a 53-52 lead, but the Lady Pointers tied the game on the second of two foul shots by Kate Mundy with four seconds left to send the game into overtime.
The lead changed hands four times early in the first quarter and Emma Marshall’s 3-pointer gave Fairland a 17-11 lead at the end of the quarter.
Fairland went on a 9-3 run and led 26-14 midway through the second quarter. Emilee Carey hit a 3-pointer that got South Point within 26-17.
But Allie Marshall scored for a 31-20 lead and then Ashley Perkey’s basket for the Lady Pointers with 13 seconds in the half cut the deficit to 31-22.
Mundy’s trey to begin the third quarter and it was 31-25.
Kelsie Warnock scored and Jenna Stone hit a 3-pointer as Fairland took a 38-27 lead with 4:26 on the clock.
A basket by Allie Marshall with 53 seconds on the clock had Fairland up 45-31. Whitt quieted things for the moment with a basket to make it 45-33 at the end of the quarter.
A 3-pointer by Harley Lyons gave Fairland its biggest lead at 49-36 with six minutes on the clock only to have Maddy Khounlavong and Mundy hit 3-pointers and get South Point within 49-42.
Mundy made another trey and Whitt sank two foul shots to tie the game at 49-49 with 1:51 to go in regulation.
Allie Marshall had 17 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots to lead the Lady Dragons. Lyons finished with 17 points including five 3-pointers and Warnock got eight points and 10 rebounds.
Thompson added six rebounds and four assists.
South Point was led by Whitt with 15 points and eight assists. Carey had 13 points and four assists, Mundy 10 points and Perkey six rebounds.
On Monday, Fairland goes to Portsmouth and South Point hosts Gallipolis.
