South Point, Dawson-Bryant elementaries honored for achievement
Two Lawrence County schools are being recognized for academic achievement.
South Point and Dawson-Bryant elementary schools have been named as Schools of High Progress in the state superintendent awards.
Criteria for the award were:
• Enrollment eligibility: Eligible schools are Title I recipients or Title I eligible, and served 40 percent or more economically disadvantaged students, as reported in EMIS for the 2017-2018 school year.
• Gains in Student Performance: Student performance on Ohio State Tests from 2014-2018 school years is evaluated against statewide gains. The school’s gains in its combined English language arts and math proficiency over the must meet or exceed the 90th percentile of all statewide gains.
• Progress Grade: If applicable, the school must earn an ‘A’ or ‘B’ on the Overall (All Students) Value-Added measure for each of the three most recent years (2016, 2017 and 2018 report cards).
• Gap Closing Grade: If applicable, the school must earn an ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ on the Gap Closing Component on the Ohio School Report Card in 2018.
All public schools administering Ohio State Tests (OSTs) were considered for the awards and selected based on the following criteria for the 2017-2018 school year.
South Point Superintendent Mark Christian described the school’s honor as “pretty impressive” and pointed out that only 66 schools in the state received it.
South Point Elementary’s principal is Chris Mathes and Bill Christian serves as administrative assistant. Angie LaFon is principal at Dawson-Bryant and Monica Mahlmeister serves as assistant principal.
