Simulation will take place today

Today, Ohio University Southern will have a mock drug exercise drill from 11 a.m.-1:45 p.m. So, if you hear about a hazardous situation on the college campus, it is just an educational training exercise and not an actual emergency situation.

The exercise is a simulation of what would happen if the drug fentanyl were found and how the hazardous substance would be dealt with and cleaned up.
Ohio Southern students will be joined by Collins Career Technical Center students for the joint learning exercise.

The simulation is based on an incident that happened this August at the Ross Correctional Institute in Chillicothe.

A prisoner showed signs of overdosing on a mixture of the opioids fentanyl and heroin.

Twenty-eight people including a nurse, corrections officers and inmates complained of symptoms of fentanyl exposure, including nausea, sweating and drowsiness. Inmates had to be transferred to different parts of the prison until hazardous material crews could clean up affected areas.

The drill on the OUS campus will take place in the Riffe Center, Shafer Courtyard and adjacent structures. The mock incident may disrupt campus operations, as affected areas will be restricted during the event.
