A friend of mine wuz out at the Ironton Country Club one day and saw one of the area’s best-ever golfers John Gagai gittin’ ready to play a round of golf. Gagai is good fer a reason. He is obsessed with golf.
He wuz playin’ with another golf enthusiast Bob Isaac. Although Isaac is in his late 80s, he still likes to play the game.
Welp, Gagai came home that day exhausted and shakin’ like something had happened. His wife, Sheila, wuz concerned and asked, “Did something happen today?”
“Yes,” said John. “When we got to the 10th hole, Bob collapsed. He wuz breathin’ but he didn’t move and I couldn’t git him to respond.”
“That’s awful,” said Sheila.
“You’re tellin’ me,” said John. “Every hole on the back nine it was, ‘drive the ball, drag Bob. Hit the wedge, drag Bob. Putt fer birdie, drag Bob.’ ”
Well, Bob recovered and wuz back at his usual spot fer mornin’ Mass. But the good news is John shot 4 under on the back nine!
Ennywhoo, last week I wuz 12-1 to bring the season record to 78-18. We is gittin’ into showdown games and rivalries, so it’ll be a tough three weeks.
Coal Grove at Ironton: Two teams that are relatively young, but Ironton has lots more experience. They also has Reid Carrico and Seth Fosson. Ironton 28, Coal Grove 20.
Rock Hill at Gallipolis: Turnovers created a 21-point swing in the Redmen loss last week. If they kin hold onto the football, I thinks this one could be … Rock Hill 32, Gallipolis 27.
Fairland at Portsmouth: This will be Joel Lambiotte vs. Talyn Parker. It’ll also be a game played at … Portsmouth 44, Fairland 42.
Chesapeake at South Point: The Panthers seem to score on anybody. The Pointers seem to give up points to anybody. Do the math. Chesapeake 42, South Point 20.
Manchester at Symmes Valley: Greyhounds is good fer racing at the Charleston dog track. They ain’t good fer defense. Symmes Valley 40, Manchester 8.
Green at Beaver Eastern: The Bobcats is facin’ a big test to keep their playoff hopes alive. They’ll battle, but I is afraid … Eastern 22, Green 16.
OTHERS: Portsmouth Notre Dame over Northwest; Oak Hill over Sciotoville East; Lucasville Valley over Belpre; Wheelersburg over Minford; Portsmouth West over Waverly; Russell over Lewis County; Ashland over Greenup County.
