ROME TOWNSHIP — The barn area of the Lawrence County Fair was full of bidders on Saturday, as the annual auction of the 4-H animals and the last tobacco took place.

All of the proceeds from the auction went to the 4-Hers, who spent long, hard hours caring for their animals and growing the tobacco.

• Grand champion goat: Isabella Kerns, Over Yonder 4-H Club: $46/lb., which equals $4,048 for the 88-pound goat; Kerns Plumbing and Judge Oakley Clark Collins Jr.

• Reserve champion goat: Gracie Daniels, Over Yonder 4-H Club: $21/lb., which equals $1,785 for the 85-pound goat; Glockner family auto dealerships, Guy’s Floor Covering, Lawrence County Commissioner Freddie Hayes Jr., Lawrence County Commissioner DeAnna Holliday and her husband, Shawn Holliday, Lawrence County Municipal Judge and common pleas candidate Donald Capper, Fayette Township Trustee Mike Finley, fair board president Randy Lambert, Fourth District Appeals Court candidate Jason Smith, and Fourth District Court of Appeals candidate Mike Hess.

• Grand champion hog: Hannah Gates, Scottown Farmer and Farmerettes 4-H Club: $33/lb., which equals $8,349 for the 253-pound hog; Jim’s Termite and Pest Control, Riverside Recovery Services, Lawrence County Auditor candidate Jason Tolliver, Lawrence County Treasurer Stephen Burcham, Lawrence County Commissioner DeAnna Holliday and her husband, Shawn, Lawrence County Commission candidate Bob McCollister, Ironton attorney Mark McCown, Lawrence County Municipal judge and common pleas candidate Donald Capper, Fourth District Court of Appeals Judge Marie Hoover, Lawrence County Clerk of Courts Mike Patterson, CLR Excavating and Baker Feeds.

• Reserve champion hog: Angel Lewis, Gingham and Demin 4-H Club: $22/lb., which equals $5,940 for the 270-pound hog; Lawrence County Municipal judge and common pleas candidate Donald Capper, and Fliehman Concessions.

• Grand champion steer: Teddilyn Craft, Arabia All-Stars 4-H Club: $6/lb., which equals $8,142 for the 1,357-pound steer; Lawrence County Municipal judge and common pleas candidate Donald Capper, Lawrence County Commissioner Freddie Hayes Jr., Glockner family auto dealerships, and Guy’s Floor Covering.

• Reserve champion steer: Karsyn Ball, Starlite 4-H Club: $6/lb., which equals $7,470 for the 1,245-pound steer; Riverside Recovery Services.

• Grand champion lamb: Haley Pancake, Over Yonder 4-H Club: $21/lb., which equals $2,877 for the 137-pound lamb; Lawrence County Auditor candidate Jason Tolliver, Lawrence County Treasurer Stephen Burcham, Lawrence County Commission candidate Bob McCollister, Lawrence County Municipal judge and common pleas candidate Donald Capper, Lawrence County Commissioner Freddie Hayes Jr., Guy’s Floor Covering, Generations Propane and Holliday’s Quick Stop.

• Reserve champion lamb: Tori Pancake, Starlite 4-H Club: $15/lb., which equals $1,620 for the 108-pound lamb; Glockner family auto dealerships, Lawrence County Commissioner Freddie Hayes Jr., Guy’s Floor Covering, Holliday’s Quick Stop, and the Ironton Jazzercise center.

• Grand champion tobacco: Bailey Fuller, Gingham and Denim 4-H Club: $1,000; Lawrence County Commissioner Freddie Hayes Jr., Glockner family auto dealerships, Guy’s Floor Covering, and Lawrence County Municipal Judge and common pleas candidate Donald Capper.

• Reserve champion tobacco: Griffin Fuller, Gingham and Denim 4-H Club: $1,000; Spice of Life Catering.

• Grand champion rabbit: Peyton Runnels, Greasy Ridge Gang 4-H Club: $2,000; Fliehman Concessions.

• Reserve champion rabbit: Jacob Freeman, Scottown Farmers and Farmerettes 4-H Club: $1,500; Guy’s Floor Covering, Lawrence County Commissioner Freddie Hayes Jr., Glockner family auto dealerships, Lawrence County Fair Board President Randy Lambert, Union Township Trustee Cole Webb, and Lawrence County Municipal judge and common pleas candidate Donald Capper.

• Grand champion chicken: Analiyah Hardy, Dog Fork Haymakers 4-H Club: $1,600; Dalton’s Towing Service, Lawrence County Auditor Jason Stephens, Wesbanco, Silver Star Shell, Rome Township Board of Trustees, Pinkerman’s Excavating and Construction, Stephen’s and Son Insurance and the Committee to Re-Elect Brian Pinkerman Rome Township Trustee.

• Reserve champion chicken: Connor Franklin, Scottown Farmer and Farmerettes 4-H Club; $1,500; Lawrence County Auditor candidate Jason Tolliver, Lawrence County Clerk of Courts Mike Patterson, Lawrence County Commissioner DeAnna Holliday, and Guy’s Floor Covering.

Other notable bids that took place at the auction included the fourth-place steer winner Matison Klaiber, of the Gingham and Denim 4-H Club, who was the winner of the Lawrence County Cattlemen’s Association scholarship of $500.

“This was my senior year, and I’ve shown steers in 4-H for the past 10 years,” Klaiber said. “To win the scholarship, I talked about why I chose cattle and what it has meant to me. It means a lot to be able to get this scholarship and tell others all about how it has impacted my life.”

Klaiber graduated from Symmes Valley High School earlier this year, and plans to study early childhood education at Ohio University Southern in Ironton in the fall.

Fourth-place tobacco winner Grace Stallo took home $1,000 for her crop, as Riverside Recovery Services made the winning bid. The significance of her crop was that it became the last tobacco to ever be sold at Lawrence County Fair.
