Meeting took place at fairgrounds for senior day
ROME TOWNSHIP — The Lawrence County Commission conducted its meeting at the county fairgrounds Tuesday afternoon during the county’s annual Senior Citizens Day.
The three commissioners spoke about the importance of the county’s seniors and praised Chesapeake-Sybene Senior Center Director Darlene Green for her continuing efforts to help the seniors.
Commissioner Freddie Hayes Jr. said he was impressed by the turnout at the event, adding that it went from 200 people its first year to 2,000 people on Tuesday, and thanked the 90-plus vendors that participated.
On the meeting’s agenda, the commission proclaimed May 2018 as Older American Month in Lawrence County. In addition, Juli Stephens, field representative for U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, had a proclamation from Johnson declaring May 15, 2018, as Lawrence County Senior Citizens Day.
“He congratulates this group for all they’ve done,” Stephens said. “And we want to congratulate Darlene Green for all of her hard work to make this happen.”
In other action, the commission:
• Approved three new floodplain permits.
• Approved the status change for Josh Caudill from full-time paramedic to part-time paramedic.
• Approved two transfer funds.
