Rock Hill coach Bob Wilds can get used to the winning, it’s just the way the Redmen are winning that is working on his nerves.

For the second straight game the Redmen got an overtime win as they outlasted the St. Joseph Flyers 75-67 Tuesday.

“I don’t have any hair left that isn’t gray. I don’t know what I’ll do if this keeps up,” said Wilds with a grin.

“But this says something about the character of our guys. They never quit. When they got down, they kept coming back.”

The biggest comeback came at the end of regulation with the Flyers leading 64-61 after T.J. Young hit both ends of a one-and-one with 1.7 seconds on the clock.

After each team took a timeout to set up a play and to defend it, Will McCollister took the inbounds pass near midcourt, turned to his left and threw to Trey Wilds who hit a 35-footer at the buzzer to force the overtime.

“We drew up the exact play they were going to run during the timeout, but we didn’t rotate to the ball and let (Wilds) get a clean look at the basket,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams.

Trey Wilds and Shane Russell did most of the damage in the overtime period as they combined to make 7 of 8 free throws.

Justin Mahlmeister drained a trifecta to start the extra period and put the Flyers up 67-64, but a layup and putback by Andy Knipp gave the Redmen a 68-67 lead.

Trey Wilds was fouled with 41 seconds left and hit the second of two shots to tie the game, then hit two more foul shots 16 seconds later. Russell had two foul shots with 16 seconds left and Wilds added two more with five seconds remaining.

The win capped a bizarre game that saw the two teams combine for 15 3-point goals.

Rock Hill (2-0) opened the game by taking a 21-0 lead. The Flyers (1-2) didn’t score until Mahlmeister hit a triple with 1:04 left in the first quarter.

Trailing 26-7 entering the second quarter, St. Joseph went on a 19-4 scoring spree and closed to within 30-26 with 3:22 left in the half as Tanner Riley hit Cody Blackburn for a layup.

McCollister hit a short jumper in the lane that put the Redmen up 34-28, but Payton Blair made a 12-footer and then knocked down a 3-pointer just before the buzzer and the Flyers were down just 34-33 at the break.

Rock Hill made 10 of 13 shots in the first quarter but only 4 of 14 in the second quarter.

“We need to get some consistency in our offense,” said coach Wilds. “We knew St. Joe would make a run. We kept telling them all week they can shoot.”

Mahlmeister’s layup at the 7:02 mark of the third quarter gave St. Joseph its first lead, the first of four lead changes in the quarter. A trifecta by Devin Darby put the Redmen ahead 44-41 and a layup by Knipp extended the lead to 46-41.

The Flyers tied the game on a 3-pointer by Young and two foul shots by Blackburn.

Rock Hill opened up a 53-48 lead with 5:32 to go in regulation on a layup by Russell. Back-to-back treys by Blair and Mahlmeister put the Flyers back in front at 56-55.

Two foul shots by Riley gave the Flyers a 61-60 lead and Young’s two free throws made the spread three points and set up the clutch play by Trey Wilds.

Wilds led five Redmen in double figures with 17 points. Knipp scored 15, McCollister and Russell 14 each and Darby had 11.

Rock Hill was 28 of 49 from the field and 8 of 16 from behind the arc.

Young and Mahlmeister scored 15 each as the Flyers had five players in double figures, too. Riley scored 13 while Blair and Eli Lewis had 10 each.
