GALLIPOLIS — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets have proven they can hit the fastball, but what about a change-up?
Coal Grove coach Rick Roach warned his team before the game about facing junk defenses and he was right as Gallipolis threw seven various defenses at the Lady Hornets in their Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
But the Lady Hornets were able to adjust and rolled to a 56-34 win over the Blue Angels.
“During pregame I told the girls to be prepared for some junk defenses and I went over a few offensive sets. Of course, we see a triangle and two and then a box and one depending when either Compliment or Hall was out,” said Roach.
“I loved it because it allowed us to slow down from our fast-paced game and run some sets. It showed we are capable of not being one or two-dimensional team.”
Alexis Hall scored 18 points to lead the Lady Hornets (4-1, 2-1). Destiny Dolen had 11 points with Kasey Murphy and Emily Compliment getting eight each.
Murphy had 10 rebounds and Dolen seven.
Alex Barnes scored 19 and Maddy Petro nine for Gallipolis (4-2, 1-2).
Hall and Dolen scored four points each in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 15-11 lead. Barnes scored six points and Petro five for Gallipolis.
Emily Compliment and Hall got four points each in the second quarter and the lead was 27-18 at the half. Barnes had five more points.
Five different players scored in the third quarter and the defense held the Blue Angels to four points as the Lady Hornets extended the lead to 38-22.
Hall scored seven points including a 3-pointer, Dolen had five points and Kasey Murphy four as the Lady Hornets outscored Portsmouth 18-12 in the fourth quarter.
Barnes scored five points and Petro four for the Blue Angels.
On Thursday, Coal Grove goes to Rock Hill and Gallipolis travels to South Point.
