Will benefit Head Start school students

The annual Lawrence County Bike Giveaway, sponsored by John Dickess, owner of Dickess Auto Repair, and Don Schwartz, manager of Advance Auto Parts in Ironton, is set for noon Saturday, Dec. 23 in the Ironton High School auditorium.

“Right now, we have 14 Head Start schools covered, which is about 40 families and 120 bikes,” Dickess said. “We’re down on donations this year, but we’re still happy with what we’ve been able to get. We didn’t have enough for all of the elementary and middle schools in the county like we usually do, but we do have the Head Start schools covered, which we’re happy with.”

Dickess and Schwartz are still accepting bike or monetary donations for the cause, which can be dropped off at Dickess Auto Repair, located at 121 S. Sixth St. in Ironton, or Advance Auto Parts, located at 615 Park Ave. in Ironton.

“People can still sign up for their children to receive a bike, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll get one,” Dickess said. “Or they might receive a used bike, which we have some of.”

Dickess added that those who will receive a bike for sure at the giveaway already know who they are, but that the event is open to the public.

“We’ll have pizza, and Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will also be there,” he said.
