HUNTINGTON, W.Va. —Marshall junior guard Jon Elmore was named to the Preseason All-Conference USA team for the second consecutive year, the league announced on Wednesday.
The Charleston, W.Va., native was one of 10 players selected in a vote by the league head coaches.
Elmore is the only player returning from last year’s league all-conference first team and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 11 first team. Last season, Elmore became the second player in Herd history to be selected for both first teams since James Kelly in the 2015-16 season.
Elmore looks to improve on a stellar sophomore season that saw him win numerous awards and break several program records, including becoming the first person to lead the league in points (19.7) and assists (5.9) since Marquette’s Travis Diener did so in the 2003-04 season. The junior native’s seven double-doubles from points and assists led the conference
Last season, the junior led the team in several categories, including field goals (210), free throws (188) free throw attempts (233) and steals (40). Elmore’s 83 3-pointers were second on the team, sixth in the conference and seventh for an individual in school history.
He became the third person in Marshall history to reach 200 assists in one season (Mike D’Antoni and Cornelius Jackson).
He was not limited to leading the team in categories. Elmore finished the season as No. 40 in points per game and No. 16 in total assists in the nation.
The Herd opens up the 2017-18 season on Nov. 10 when it hosts UT-Martin.
