This Saturday, the Fruth Pharmacy stores in Ironton and Proctorville will have cancer awareness events.

The event at the Ironton store runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Dr. Jeffrey Lopez and Dr. Terry Justice of Tri-State Regional Cancer Center will be available for people to talk about cancer screenings and more.

“Anyone who wants to come in, the doctors will talk to them about cancer, treatments, screenings, anything they would like to know,” said Melony Sherman, the marketing director for Fruth. “They have volunteered their time to talk with people.”

The store will also have a couple basket raffles to raise funds and a raffle of a “Mystery Cancer Awareness Bag” with five bracelets to represent different cancers.

Sherman said that the company has done things like a 5K run at the corporate office in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, to raise money for fighting cancer and has focused on breast cancer awareness. This year, they decided to include all cancer colors across the chain.

“This year, we have been selling multicolored ribbons to collect funds for each store’s organization of choice,” she said. The Ironton Fruth Pharmacy chose Tri-State Regional Cancer Center and to focus on raising funds for cancer patients who need assistance with gas costs when they go in for treatment.

“Every store does a big event on the last day we are collecting and that is Saturday,” Sherman said. “

The Proctorville Fruth Pharmacy’s choice of organization is the Edward’s Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Good Samaritan fund. Their event is also from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday.

“One of the things they do is purchase wigs for people who lose their hair during cancer treatment,” Sherman said. “And they help people purchase medical equipment.”

The Proctorville Fruth has a Giving Tree, where you can purchase items that are needed for cancer patients and donate to them.

“They also have basket raffles and a mystery bag as well,” Sherman said. “They will also be having a hot dog and bake sale to raise funds.”

Sherman said the stores across the chain of Fruth pharmacies raise over $60,000 last year.

“Mainly, it was for cancer patients. Fruth tries to focus on local organizations and things that we know are going directly to people in the community,” she said. “We give our stores a choice in what they want to support in their community.”
