Hornets post big numbers for big win over Indians

COAL GROVE — A lot of yards equals a lot of points.

The Coal Grove Hornets amassed 436 total yards including 307 on the ground as they rolled past the Lucasville Valley Indians 38-20 on Friday.

Coal Grove quarterback Nate Harmon and running back Kyle Sites did the bulk of the damage offensively.

Harmon was 7-of-14 passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns while also running seven times for 74yards and a score.

Sites was the workhorse with 25 carries for 150 yards and caught a touchdown pass.

The Hornets defense limited the Indians to just 48 net yards rushing. They did manage to complete 7-of-18 passes for 152 yards to give them 200 total yards for the game.

Valley used a 32-yard interception return by Gabe Streeter and Cayton Ruby’s conversion kick to take a 7-0 lead with 5:40 left in the first quarter.

The Hornets came back with a 69-yard, 8-play drive the culminated on a 20-yard scoring pass from Nate Harmon to Jeb Jones. Kyle Sites ran for the conversion and it was 8-7 with 9:49 on the second quarter clock.

Valley answered with a 67-yard, 6-play drive that also ended on a pass play as Andrew Andronis hit Tanner Spradlin with a 26-yard toss and Ruby’s kick had the Indians up 14-8.

Coal Grove came right back to tie the bam on a 26-yard scoring pass from Harmon to Sam Angelo with just 28 seconds left in the half. The play capped a 65-yard, 8-play march.

The Hornets got the ball right back and struck quickly as Harmon and Sites clicked on a 48-yard scoring pass with 10 seconds to go. Harmon ran for the conversion and it was 22-14 at the half.

The Hornets used another long drive as they went 69 yards in eight plays to score with 6:40 left in the third quarter. Harmon rambled 35 yards for the touchdown and he also ran for the conversion.

The Indians (0-2) cut the deficit to 30-20 with 6:49 to play on a 49-yard pass from Andrew Shope to Streeter. The conversion pass failed.

But the Hornets went on a 51-yard, 8-play march that ended on a 4-yard scoring run by Kimo Baldwin with 2:05 left. Workman’s conversion finished off the scoring.

The Hornets host Portsmouth West next Friday.
