SOUTH POINT — There’s no “I” in team, but there is in “win.”
The South Point Pointers got a team effort and as a result posted a season-opening 18-0 win over the Roane County Raiders on Friday.
The victory was not only the first of the season for the Pointers, but it marked the career first win for head coach Chase Kratzenberg who took over the program midway through last season.
Quarterback Joel Morrison ran 15 times for 58 yards and a score while also hitting 8-of-17 passing for 111 yards.
Tayshaun Fox had seven carries for 58 yards and Cade Brandt had six receptions for 93 yards and he had a kickoff return for a score. Jeremy McMillan caught one pass for 15 yards.
Roane County had 150 yards rushing and 58 passing as quarterback Brandon May ran 13 times for 38 yards and was 3-of-9 passing.
Josh Huffman carried 13 times for 45 yards and Isaac Ryan got 47 yards on just seven attempts.
Greg Hart had two catches for 29 yards and Donny Bush one reception for 28 yards.
The Pointers took the lead late in the first quarter as they went on a 74-yard march that lasted just three plays. Jeremy McMillan went 2 yards for the touchdown and it was 6-0.
After a scoreless second quarter, Brandt returned the second half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and the Pointers now led 12-0.
The Pointers got the ball back and scored quickly as Morrison bolted 31 yards for the touchdown and it was 18-0 with 9:08 left in the third quart.
South Point controlled the football in the second half. The Pointers took over with 9:36 left in the third quarter and went on a 17-play, 65-yard drive that racked up six first down.
The drive stalled on a fourth down play at the 13-yard line but they did not give the ball back to the Raiders until 3:36 was left to play.
The Pointers host Boyd County, Ky., next Friday.
