State, local and national law enforcement and agencies sent a clear message last week: Pill mills and pain clinics that are not following the law aren’t welcome in Lawrence County.

A multi-jurisdictional raid involving the Internal Revenue Service, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, Ohio Pharmacy Board, the Lawrence County Drug Task Force and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office was conducted in Burlington.

The unnamed clinic in the strip mall shopping center of off Walmart Way was raided under suspicion of being an illegal clinic. Investigators spent the day interviewing the doctor and staff at the clinic but information about what was allegedly occurring there has been sealed so far in federal court.

But law enforcement officials have said they don’t anticipate the clinic opening its doors any time soon — or even at all.

It is important that everyone remembers that no one involved with these clinics has been charged with a crime right now and every American is innocent until proven guilty.

Still, for all these agencies to raid this clinic, probable cause existed and they were at least investigating. That means our law enforcement agencies are cracking down and sending a tough message to any who actually would break the law.

That approach will make Lawrence County a better place for everyone.
