Barker earns first place in grooming competition

Kate Barker of The BARKer Shop, earned first place at a grooming competition on Friday, Nov. 12.

The competition was held at Nash Academy, one of the nation’s top grooming academies, in Lexington, Ky.

Barker competed against some of the top groomers, winning first place in Level 1 -Terriers and More. She groomed her Giant Schnauzer, Boaz, to the standards set by the American Kennel Club.

Library awards contract for Kyova branch

CANNONSBURG, Ky. — Construction will begin within the next couple of weeks on the new Boyd County Public Library branch at the Kyova Mall.

Trustees this week awarded a bid to Mullins Construction of Wheelersburg, for the Kyova Branch.

The contract, which totaled $140,000, includes all the remodeling, inside and out. Carpet, shelving and furniture are still being selected.

Mullins is expected to begin work by early December, possibly sooner.

BCPL signed a 10-year lease in August for a 6,200-square foot space at the mall. The BCPL Kyova Branch will be located across from Elder-Beerman and near the Sears anchor store.

The new location will give the library an additional 2,000 square feet of floor space than in its current building on Summit Road.

The added space means more room for programming, materials and computers. The mall location will also have increased parking and will be more visible.

The Summit location will become an outreach center, housing materials for the homebound and other outreach programs and services. A books-by-mail service is also being discussed.

“The intention is for the Kyova Branch to be very contemporary,” said Director Debbie Cosper. The branch will house an extensive collection of popular materials for adults and children. There will be a large meeting room — which can be divided into two smaller ones — and at least double the number of computers currently at Summit. Being in the mall also means the library will have access to much more space to conduct large programs.

Cosper anticipates the new branch to open in February.

Walker & Associates of Ashland designed the plans for the Kyova Branch. The drawings will be posted on the library’s web site, www.thebookplace.org, by the time construction begins.

Scouts to pick up canned goods

The Boy Scouts and the Ironton City Mission are teaming up to collect food for the needy.

Saturday morning members of Troop 109 will start collecting canned goods from area households.

The scouts ask that a bag of canned goods be placed outside homeowners’ front doors by 9 a.m. for Scout pickup.

Items wanted include cans of soup, beef stew, chili, meats, vegetables, fruits, milk, plus dry boxed goods and jars of peanut butter.

Nothing perishable, frozen or in glass should be in the bag.

Fundraising scam in area

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — St. Mary’s Medical Center is warning the public that someone posing as a representative of St. Mary’s is trying to collect funds through phone calls and door-to-door solicitation.

St. Mary’s has been made aware of at least two such attempts to collect money or ask for credit card information for such a donation. In both cases a woman said she was collecting money to buy Christmas toys for sick children.

St. Mary’s does have a charitable foundation that helps the community in many different ways, but St. Mary’s would never solicit door-to-door or by phone.

Please call your local police department if someone posing as a St. Mary’s representative has recently asked you for money or for your credit card information.
