We know that our history in Lawrence County is as bountiful as the water that flows down the mighty Ohio River.
But when we can learn about historical people and places that were cornerstones of our cities, villages and townships from re-enactments or speakers, the vision of what our county was like hundreds of years ago comes alive.
That was the case last week when the voice of Wheel of Fortune, Jim Thornton, shared the history of his home with a third grade class at Fairland West Elementary. Thornton’s residence was the former home of Jacob Proctor, the founder of Proctorville.
Being able to visualize what a home or person in Lawrence County’s history can be a valuable experience that enhances what can be learned in a book. This includes events like the Woodland Cemetery Walk in Ironton.
We applaud Thornton for taking the time to speak to the class at Fairland West Elementary along with all those who work hard to put events on each year to bring our county’s rich history to the forefront and educate residents.
While we certainly want to work toward a bright future, we certainly should never forget our past.
