The 37th annual Ohio University Southern graduation ceremony took place Thursday evening in the Shaffer Courtyard, where 71 out of 124 total graduates participated.

“Coming to Ohio University Southern has been one of the best decisions of my life,” Mitch Sutton, of Ironton, said. “I’ve gotten a lot of good experience here and have made a lot of friends here. I’ll hold onto everything I’ve learned for the rest of my life.”

Sutton received his Associate’s Degree in electronic media, and said he plans on continuing to work for WSAZ after getting a job there as a photo journalist this past semester.

The procession of faculty and staff into the courtyard, followed by the graduates, kicked off the ceremony before Outstanding Graduate Zachary Waddle gave an invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Graduate Susan Taylor sang the National Anthem before OUS Coordinating Board Chair Tyler Walters gave an introduction and Nicole Pennington, dean, gave the crowd a greeting.

The ceremony continued with Dr. Hayley Haugen, academic division coordinator, giving a greeting from the faculty and handing out the Faculty Award, and Pennington handing out the Alumni Award.

Ironton Mayor Katrina Keith led the charge to graduates, which preceded the presentation of candidates by three faculty members and degree recognition by Dr. Miki Crawford, associate dean. Pennington concluded the ceremony with closing remarks before the recessional and reception following the ceremony.

David Adkins and Nathan Adkins, a father and son who graduated together on Thursday, reflected on their time at OUS.

“It’s a good place to go to school,” Nathan said. “It’s a small school and you can always find help.”

Nathan received his Bachelor’s Degree in applied management, while David received an Associate’s Degree in business.

“It’s a very good school, and it’s definitely student-friendly,” David said. “It’s pretty amazing to be graduating with my son. We didn’t plan it, but it means a lot.”

He added that following graduation, he plans to look for a job in home improvement management.

Alexis Wright, a nursing graduate with a minor in psychology, said she also enjoyed her time at Ohio University Southern.

“The faculty and staff are very helpful, and a small campus size and small class sizes make it easier to get your questions answered here,” she said. “I loved my experience here.”

After graduation, Wright is set to begin working at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

“We’re really proud of all of our graduates,” Pennington said. “And we’re so happy to celebrate with them this evening in the beautiful Shaffer Courtyard.”
