Students offer services to visitors

GETAWAY — The Collins Career Technical Center spring Senior Citizens Day was Friday, when seniors had the opportunity to take part in a number of activities and take advantage of some services offered to them by the school.

“We’ve been doing this for years,” Cathy Moore, CCTC assessment coordinator, said. “We have one in the fall and one in the spring.”

As seniors arrived to the event, they were treated to breakfast in the Collins Corner Grille, before they were able to walk around the campus and see what was offered.

Stations at the event included Healthy Living, where seniors were able to get a health screening, which included checking blood pressure, blood sugar, pulse, weight and cholesterol, Tune In, where students checked air pressure, belts, hoses and fluid levels on vehicles, Signs and Symptoms of Stroke, a Cake Walk, Scrub a Dub Dub, where students washed vehicles, Picture Perfect, where students took digital photos, Bingo and Pamper Yourself, where cosmetology students offered haircuts, styles, scalp massages, manicures, pedicures, arm massages and waxing.

“This is a great event for the students and the seniors to interact,” Moore said. “The students look forward to it, we look forward to it and the seniors look forward to this event.”

Moore said that all of the students at the school participate in the event in some way or another, whether it be their class putting on one of the stations, security, acting as guides for the seniors or donating and/or making items to be used as door prizes.

“This was my second time coming out here for this. I enjoy having my hair and nails done and my cholesterol checked,” Paula Burcham, of Rome Township, said. “I think it’s wonderful that Collins Career Center takes care of their seniors.”

South Point residents Jessica Dillon and Irene Wentz agreed, and said another part about the day that they enjoy is the fellowship it brings.

“I enjoy being with my friends and having all of these amenities available that seniors can’t always afford,” Dillon said.

This was Dillon and Wentz’s second time attending the event.

“I enjoy the fellowship, and the kids are all very nice,” Wentz said. “It’s a good time for seniors to get out, especially if you’re alone, and have a chance to be with others. I really enjoy it and thank Collins Career Center for doing this for us. It’s very special.”
