This past week, students, teachers and librarians donned their striped socks and hats while giving their best tongue twister vernacular to one another in celebration of Dr. Seuss Day.
It has become an annual tradition throughout the county and country, on the day that Theodor Seuss Geisell, author of iconic stories like “The Cat in the Hat” and “Horton Hears a Who,” among others, would have celebrated his birthday. So in grand fashion, many teachers and students paid homage to the children’s author and cartoonist with a variety of events.
Dr. Seuss has been an important part of our youth through reading, with his clever writing style. Even many authors today afford our children the chance to develop important skills needed through challenging their brains and imaginations through their writing, just like Dr. Seuss has for eight decades.
Studies have shown that developing a love for reading comes from having fun while being educated at an early age, and Dr. Seuss’s writing style certainly provides that environment.
However, we must remember that it is not only the charge of our educators and librarians to develop this passion. It needs to start at home with parents reading with their children and making each book fun.
