Plan being developed for potholes

Potholes — one of the most reported complaints we receive in the City of Ironton. Why are there so many potholes and why do we not repave our streets?
On average, asphalted streets remain intact for 25 years. However, there are numerous factors that can affect their lifespan, such as the climate, traffic and whether or not the owner performs routine maintenance. Many of Ironton’s streets have exceeded the 25-year life span, so many of our streets are ready for an upgrade.
Couple this with Ohio’s unpredictable weather patterns. During rain and snow events, water seeps underneath the asphalt and can cause it to slowly erode. If the road is situated in a cold climate, the water will turn into ice and expand, and, as a result, any cracks or small holes in the pavement will become larger. Exceptionally hot climates can increase the level of oxidation within the asphalt. Over time, the pavement will become brittle more swiftly than it would if the asphalt was located in a temperate climate.
Now, without routine maintenance, most types of asphalt will provide approximately 90 percent of their original level of structural integrity after 10 years. Once 20 years have passed, the asphalt will only have 55 percent of its initial durability. Our street department currently employs two laborers, a truck driver and a heavy equipment operator. We have approximately 55 miles of street to maintain. The street department doesn’t have adequate staff to maintain our roads as suggested by the National Asphalt Pavement Association.
What are the options?
During the winter months, we are forced to use a temporary cold patch material to fill in the potholes while, during the summer months, we utilize a permanent hot patch material.
I have secured funding which will allow the City to partner with ODOT to begin discussing plans to repave the entrance into Ironton at the State Route 141 ramp and the entrance ramp at State Route 93 along Park Avenue to Second Street.
In addition, I am working with our street superintendent and engineer to develop a long-term plan to address all streets within the City of Ironton. This plan will be executed as funding becomes available.
Please be mindful of the street conditions when driving and please be patient as we address our pothole issue.
