COAL GROVE — Emily Compliment came out with the hot hand and scored 9 points.
The Chesapeake Lady Panthers adjusted their defense to slow her down, but the Coal Grove Lady Hornets turned to Compliment’s teammates to post a 61-55 double overtime Ohio Valley Conference win on Monday.
“We knew coming in that it would be close. We didn’t realize it would be a double overtime game,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“All of my starters were dragging heading into the second overtime. (Lauren) Crum stepped up and made some big shots. I was very pleased with (Kasey) Murphy’s aggression.”
Crum finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Compliment had 14 points, Destiny Dolen scored 12 and had eight rebounds while Murphy finished with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Chesapeake (7-3, 4-2) was led by Natalee with a game-high 20 points. Dominique Murphy added 13 points and Brooke Webb scored 11.
Compliment scored nine points in the first quarter including 4-of-5 from the foul line as Coal Grove took a 17-13 lead.
The Lady Hornets were up 24-22 at the half but then Hall scored six points in the third quarter to give Chesapeake a 35-31 lead.
Crum hit a 3-point and scored five points in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove tied the game at 44 and force overtime.
Each team scored six points in the first overtime and it was 50-all. Webb had five points in the first overtime.
Crum scored seven points in the overtime periods and the Lady Hornets were 10-of-13 from the line.
“We had a couple of times to finish the game at the end of regulation but we’d make one free throw and miss the next,” said Roach.
“(Chesapeake coach Chris) Ball does a good job getting hit team good looks. Hall and (Dominique) Murphy are great players.”
In league games on Thursday, Chesapeake hosts Fairland and Coal Grove travels to Ironton.
