IRVING, Texas — Former NFL receiver Terry Glenn has been charged with auto theft in what his attorney says is a mix-up over a car rental.
The 35-year-old Glenn was booked into the Irving jail Tuesday evening and released about six hours later. His attorney, Luis Vera of San Antonio, called the arrest a “crock of garbage.”
He said Wednesday that Glenn had rented a sport-utility vehicle from National Car Rental several weeks ago while his Bentley was in the shop. He said Glenn was on his way to return the SUV when police stopped and arrested him, telling him National had reported the vehicle stolen.
In an e-mail Wednesday, National spokeswoman Laura Bryant said company officials are investigating the matter. However, she said, “there was communication between our agent and Mr. Glenn before the car was reported missing.” She didn’t elaborate.
Glenn played 12 NFL seasons from 1996 to 2007, with the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys.
A year ago, he was arrested on public intoxication and marijuana possession allegations at an Irving hotel.
