PROCTORVILLE — If the middle school is a feeder system, the Fairland Dragons could be eating well in a few seasons.
The Fairland Middle School Junior Dragons completed a 7-1 season complete with an Ohio Valley Conference Middle School championship.
The Dragons went unbeaten through the conference with wins over Coal Grove, South Point, Rock Hill, Chesapeake and River Valley. They beat Gallipolis and Wayne, W.Va., in non-conference play and their only loss was to Buffalo, W.Va.
Tough wins over top contenders South Point and Coal Grove helped the Dragons win their first conference outright championship since 2003.
Fairland’s success was due mainly to its running game that amassed more than 2,000 yards as a team. Nathan Campbell led the ground attack with 1,024 yards while Dylan Murphy ran for more than 500 yards and Sidney Tucker eclipsed the 400 yard total.
Campbell topped the team with 22 touchdowns including 19 rushing, one receiving, one passing and one punt return.
Quarterback Chance Short helped balance the offense by throwing for 270 yards and five touchdowns.
The defense proved formidable by allowing just nine touchdowns all season.
Coleton Brumfield was a key figure on defense with two interceptions return for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
Fairland had several players rack up double digits in tackles led by Campbell with 49 stops. Tucker with 39, Murphy 41 and Blake Kerstetter had 34.
The Junior Dragons were coached by Layne Wireman and assistant coaches Glenn Dillon and Bryan Ward.
