PEDRO — The game went into double overtime. That pretty much says it all.
Playing in a game that goes two overtimes can only mean quite a battle and that’s exactly what happened as the Chesapeake Panthers outlast the Rock Hill Redmen 66-58 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Tuesday.
“These kids just fight and scrap. They play as hard as they can and that’s I ask of them. That was some kind of battle tonight. Rock Hill played as hard as they can, too,” said Panthers’ coach Ryan Davis.
Rock Hill coach Sam Gue was disappointed in the loss but echoed Davis’ sentiments.
“At some point we have to believe it is going to go the other direction at the end of these close games,” said Gue. “Our guys battled and I’m proud of the effort the have given to this program.”
Mason Darby and Tyler Damron scored 6 points each as Rock Hill took a 14-6 first quarter lead.
The Panthers (2-4, 1-2) cut the deficit to 17-14 at the half and Cole Mills scored 11 points in the third quarter as Chesapeake took a 31-30 lead.
Darby scored 5 with Damron and Jaret Bacorn getting 4 each for the Redmen.
Rock Hill’s Logan Hankins hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer in regulation to tie the game at 41 and force the first overtime.
Tanner Harr scored 7 points in the fourth quarter for Chesapeake.
Rock Hill’s Tim Adkins knocked down a 17-footer in the final seconds of the first overtime to tie the game at 49 and send the game to a second extra period.
Both teams scored 8 points in the first overtime to make it 49-49.
Chesapeake outscored the Redmen 17-9 in the second overtime.
“So many different guys stepped up in crucial situations and made plays. We simply didn’t value the basketball like we needed to and did not do a great job of closing out on shooters,” said Gue.
“It’s not any secret Chesapeake is well-coached. I was fortunate enough to coach with Ryan (Davis) and knew he’d have them ready coming into our place. Nothing but respect for the job he has done over the years. That doesn’t make this loss and easier. Seeing the resiliency our kids showed the entire game makes it so tough.”
Mills hit five 3-pointers and led the Panthers with 21 points. Casey McComas had 14 points and Harr added 10.
Darby led the Redmen with 22 points, 19 rebounds and 5 assists. Damron scored 14 points and Bacorn added 10 points and 7 rebounds.
On Friday, Rock Hill visits Ironton and Chesapeake hosts Portsmouth.
