Most adults know that Lawrence County has a rich history, but one of the most important things we can do is pass that along to our young people.

While talking to them about our past can be entertaining, performing their own research and writing essays about various subjects can bring that history to life.

That is the goal of the Lawrence County Historical Society’s annual essay contest.

Around two-dozen entries were submitted for this year’s contest, and the winners were chosen and honored at an event at the museum.

The winning entries for this years contest were Gran Wilson and Sunserae Henderson, in first and second place respectively, from Dawson-Bryant Elementary, and third place was awarded to Austin Dement from Symmes Valley Elementary.  Their essays will also be published in this Sunday’s edition of The Tribune, and we encourage our readers to take a look at their work about the Burlington Macedonia Church, Antoinette Sherpetoska and the Rome Beauty Apple.

We commend all those students who worked hard to complete their essay for the contest, and taking the time to continue the preservation of Lawrence County’s wonderful history.

This is an important contest to keep our county’s past in the forefront, and we hope that the Lawrence County Historical Society continues their sponsorship and our young people continue to participate.
