Rock Hill Middle School Junior Honor Society collects food for Backpack Buddies

A food drive recently conducted by the Rock Hill Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society was highly successful, as 2,290 items were collected.

The food was raised for Backpack Buddies, a local charity sponsored through Campbell Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Ironton that provides food packs to children in several local districts in the county.

The packs are single serving meals and snacks that can be opened and prepared by the child, and serve as weekend food and supplement the child’s diet at home.

“Rock Hill Middle School National Junior Honor Society members sponsored a food drive and collected specific items to donate to Backpack Buddies, such as individual easy-open soups and pastas, cereals, crackers, Raman Noodles, puddings and apple sauce,” Denise Fraley, teacher at Rock Hill Middle and advisor of the school’s National Junior Honor Society, said. “We had a competition between classes with the class collecting the most items receiving breakfast served by NJHS members.”

The winning classroom in the competition was that of eighth grade science teacher Greg Scythes.
