As the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s Central Division got better and better by adding teams such as Clayton Northmont and Springfield to powers Centerville and Huber Heights Wayne, one school was shunted to the background.
Beavercreek finally broke through, however.
The Beavers ended a 13-game conference losing skid — and a string of 13 straight defeats overall — by beating Kettering Fairmont 27-14 on Friday.
“It took a little longer than we hoped, but we finally got it,” Beavers coach Scott Clodfelter said. “I think we’ve done a good job of not letting the kids quit. Hey, when adversity hits, we’re ready for it. We’re used to it.”
ODDITY: Steubenville will qualify for the playoffs without having beaten an Ohio high school this fall. The Big Red are 0-2 against in-state competition (Massillon Washington, Youngstown Ursuline) and 7-0 against out-of-state opponents. Steubenville’s schedule includes games against teams from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., West Virginia (3) and New York (2).
RINGING ENDORSEMENT: Lakewood St. Edward thrashed Cincinnati Moeller 31-7, as Kevin Burke threw for 204 yards and a TD and rushed for 118 yards and two TDs.
“It’s a good football team,” Moeller coach John Rodenberg said of St. Ed’s. “I think it’s a team that will be playing in the state championship.”

GOOD ALL UNDER: McComb’s Taylor Hanes caught five passes for 147 yards and four touchdowns in a 63-2 win over Arcadia, and in the process tied the state record for TD receptions in a season with 27. Through nine games, Hanes has caught 80 passes for 1,385 yards and 27 TDs, tying the record Ben Wonderly of Sherwood Fairview established in 2007.

Travis completed 14 of 23 passes for 208 yards and three scores, setting marks for yards passing (1,674) and TD passes (20) in a season. His 32 career TD passes is also a school record. Muelman caught all three TD passes (28, 44, 23 yards) giving him a single season record 11.

Finally, Orrville (6-3) will visit Wooster (7-2) for an historic 100th meeting Saturday, continuing a series that started in 1903.
