ROCHESTER, Minn. — Geraldine Yates Rist, 85, of Rochester, formerly of Ironton, passed away Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center in Rochester. The Pikeville, Ky., native was born Oct. 11, 1925, the daughter of the late William McKinley Yates and Cora Childers Yates. She is survived by her husband, Louis Raymond “Ray” Rist, whom she married Jan. 12, 1946. During their 64 years of marriage they resided in Ohio, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, Ireland, St. Vincent, West Indies, Haiti, North Carolina and Michigan.
Mrs. Rist was a graduate of Virgie High School in Virgie, Ky. She attended the First Presbyterian Church while she lived in Ironton. She was an extraordinary homemaker and an amazing and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Rist; two brothers, Rex Yates and Edsel Yates; two sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law, Clarice and Paul Beals and Mary Lou and Bill Coburn, Leonard Rist and George Rist.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jerolyn Rist Szuch and her husband, William of Rochester; grandson, Brett Szuch of Rochester; granddaughter Erin Szuch of New York, N.Y.; a sister and brother-in-law, Billie Jean and Ralph Morris of Ironton; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Janet Yates of Coal Grove; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Leah and Remy Meeks of Ironton; sister-in-law, Shirley Yates of Lexington, Ky.; sister-in-law, Martha Rist of Grove City and sister-in-law, Shirley Rist of Eldersburg, Md.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First Church of the Nazarene with Remy Meeks officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 6-9 p.m. at Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home and the body will lie in state one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
