Roane topples Pointers

SPENCER, W.Va. — The South Point Pointers didn’t make it easy.

The Roane County Vikings pulled away from the Pointers to win 42-22 in the season opener on Friday.

Quarterback Tyler May rand 36 yards for a touchdown and Andrew Kinder kicked the conversion as Roane County went up 7-0 at the 8:13 mark of the first quarter.

South Point rallied to take an 8-7 lead when Elijah Adams returned a blocked punt 56 yards for a touchdown and added the conversion run as well with 3:44 on the clock.

The Vikings took the lead for good on a 27-yards pass from May to Kinder and it was 13-8 just before the end of the quarter.

The lead went to 21-8 at the half when Kinder caught a 42-yard pass from May with 8:56 left in the half. Kinder threw to Ethan Myers for the conversion.

Roane County extended the lead to 28-8 on a 12-yard scoring run by May with 10:33 on the third quarter clock. Kinder added the conversion kick.

Jared Whitt ran 5 yards for a touchdown as the Pointers cut the deficit to 28-14 with 11:55 to play.

But the Vikings came right back with a scoring drive capped by May’s 1-yard run and Kinder’s kick with 3:56 to go.

Owen Chafin broke free on a 67-yards scoring gallop as South Point got within 35-22.

The Vikings added an insurance score with just 42 second left on a 24-yard run by Tyler Ricker and Kinder’s kick.
