St. Joseph opens up with wins

NEW BOSTON — The St. Joseph Flyers are 2-for-2.

The Flyers began the soccer season with a pair of wins as they beat the New Boston Tigers 4-1 on Thursday after opening with a 5-2 win over the South Point Pointers on Tuesday.

Four different players scored in the win over New Boston. Peyton Adkins, Tre Neal, Zach Roach and Isaac Whaley all scored. Whaley added three assists and Clay Willis added another.

Flyers’ goalie Bradley Rise recorded eight saves.

Truitt scored New Boston’s goal and Bryce Davis had six saves.

St. Joseph had 25 shots on goal to seven for New Boston. Each team had three corner kicks.

The Flyers had six fouls and the Tigers 10 with each team getting a yellow card.

The defense was led by Daniel Hodges, Chase Walters. T.J. Stone and Clay Willis.

“This was a good win for us as we had four different guys score goals,” said Flyers’ coach Mike Balestra.

“Our defense worked well to keep a good amount of possession and Bradley Rise was strong in the goal as well. Overall it was a great night.”

On Tuesday, Roach and Neal racked up two goals each while Neal added the other goal. Blake Balestra, Adkins, Neal and Whaley all had assists with Rist notching seven saves.

Jake Helton and Merrick Harris scored South Point’s goals. Jordan Perkey had four saves.

St. Joseh had 21 shots on goal, one corner kick and three fouls. South Point had 16 shots on goal, eight corner kicks and two fouls.

“Both offensively and defensively we played really well. We possessed the ball and played well as a team from back to front,” said coach Balestra.

The Flyers play at Adena on Tuesday.
