CLEVELAND –– Texas senator Ted Cruz congratulated Donald Trump on winning the Republican presidential nomination during his Republican National Convention speech Wednesday night, but did not offer his endorsement for the candidate.
“I want to congratulate Donald Trump on winning the nomination last night,” Cruz said to the crowd, the only time hementioned Trump’s name. “And like each of you, I want to see the principles that our party believes in prevail in November.”
Instead of speaking about Trump, Cruz used the stage to talk about his and the Republican Party’s conservative views, urging the people to “vote your conscience,” and repeatedly saying the Republicans believe in freedom.
“Don’t stay home in November. If you love our country and if you love your children as much as I know you do, stand, and speak, and vote your conscience,” he said. “Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you can trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the constitution.”
With no endorsement of Trump by the end of Cruz’s speech, loud boos echoed through the arena, led by the delegation of New York, and resulting in Cruz’s wife having to be escorted out from the floor.
Former U.S. Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich showed his support for Trump during his speech, as well as attempt to recover Cruz with the RNC crowd.
“Ted Cruz said you can vote your conscience for anyone who will uphold the Constitution. In this election, there is only one candidate who will uphold the Constitution,” he said of Donald Trump. “If you want to protect the Constitution, the only answer is the Trump, Pence Republican ticket.”
